Outside the Neighborhood: Host a Screening
Would you like your family, friends and community members to see The Collector of Bedford Street? Hosting a house party is a great way to bring these people together to see this documentary. Following the movie you discuss can the issues addressed in The Collector of Bedford Street, and begin to bring more tolerance into your community.
These suggestions were created by our friends at The Arc, one of The Collector of Bedford Street's outreach partners. The following sample questions are helpful for holding discussions following the broadcast.
- Pick a location.
- The key to picking a location is to make sure it is within the neighborhood (or very nearby), and will accommodate at least a small group of people. A house party does not need to be held in a house. Also consider accessibility for your guests who have a disability. Do the entrances and restrooms have wheelchair access?
- Make your guest list.
- Start with neighbors, close friends, and then move on to people in the community you would like to get to know or people who would be interested in the topic.
- Send out invitations.
- You can find a sample invitation below. Keep your invitations simple and straightforward. If attendance numbers are important (to avoid overcrowding of your location during the party) be sure to include an RSVP.
- Arrange refreshments.
- House parties are traditionally relaxed and casual, so don't spend too much time and effort on food.
- Lead a discussion following the movie.
- You can download a discussion guide for The Collector of Bedford Street on this web site. If there are topics you would like to address during your discussion give your guests some additional information on areas of particular interest.
